The Cost of Convenience? A Carbon Intensive Supply Chain

Behind the convenience and efficiency of eCommerce deliveries lies a stark reality: the environmental toll of carbon emissions from last mile logistics is extremely high.  In light of the need for more green innovation, Onrout and Paccurate announce the greenest partnership in small parcel.

Why partner? Onrout and Paccurate are dedicated to reducing the carbon footprint of last mile parcel delivery, and by combining our efforts, we can help bring shippers and carriers better solutions to be greener as the industry continues to grow.

In the spirit of partnering for better environmental outcomes, Onrout and Paccurate offer.

5 ways to cut emissions from the parcel space

1. Stop Shipping Air

Using a box too big is a bridge too far.  By optimizing the mix of boxes you use and using the smallest possible one for each order, you can reduce your costs and your emissions. A box full of air is a waste of truck space that could be used for other pieces, leading to fewer trucks on the road.. Not sure how to optimize your boxing?  Call Paccurate.  We can help!.

2. Close is better than far

Shipping out of one fulfillment center translates to a lot of packages traveling cross-country to reach their destination.  Moving inventory closer to the customer shortens the distance a parcel travels, and reduces the emissions of a shipment.  Multiple fulfillment centers (or ship-from-store) will shorten the distance you ship, reducing cost and emissions.

3. Slow it down

The slower the service you choose the lower the emissions due to higher truck capacity utilization.  Offering your customers deferred services will save you money and save emissions.  Not everything needs to be there the next day.

4. Who doesn’t love a piggy back ride?

Give your parcel to the carrier that’s already stopping at your customer’s address...  Piggy back on someone else’s delivery.  Carriers can now offer you discounted dynamic rates when they can find you that piggyback ride (or that carpool if they’re going to your customer’s neighbor.).  Less emissions, lower rates.  Onrout can connect you to dynamic rates and make your piggy back dreams come true..

5. Please don’t build your own delivery network:

Few strategies are worse for emissions than retailers building out their own delivery networks.  National retailers that have done this are achieving some goals (lower costs, faster delivery, more control), but adding additional vehicles into the last mile, duplicating routes already served by multiple carriers just creates more emissions.  If you have millions burning a hole in your pocket, ready to build out a network, please come talk to Paccurate and Onrout to innovate your supply chain, maximize your efficiency, and reduce your emissions..
